A few weeks ago I got the chance to drop in on a Chargers rehearsal. I arrived mid-rehearsal, after which I got introduced to the Chargers. Steve Barone and Ron Kinscherf on guitar and vocals, Curt Dorey on bass and vocals with Tony Morgan sitting behind the drum kit. After a little small talk, they started cranking out the tunes. They plowed through songs like, “Spooky”, “Drive My Car”, “Money (That’s What I Want)”, “Brown Sugar”, “Doo Wah Diddy”, “Hey Joe” and a handful of other classics.
On March 9th, the Chargers broke their silence at the Clearwater Steakhouse & Saloon after Steve’s other group, Trio Deluxe played their own set. They were joined onstage by well-known local saxaphone player, Bruce Guy. The amps were cranked and the dance floor was packed. It sounded like their 44 years of separation had dissolved entirely.

Sorry I couldn’t make the show. What was the set list?
“The Last Time, “All Over Now, “Hey Bartender”,”You Don’t Love Me” (a Sonny and Cher tune) “We Gotta Get Outta This Place”, “Betty Lou” and “Run For Your Life”.
Boy does it bring back memories to hear “Taxi” and “I’m So Alone”! Heard those so many times – the songs practiced in our garage. I sang along, but not very loudly, as my brother, Steve, was the singer in the family. I made a better listener! So good hear the songs again!
We are actually reviving those two songs, and they sound better now. At least I think so. We are also re-doing the other three unreleased songs but “The News in General” is difficult…I don’t remember how we did it, but I can’t figure it out now. Hopefully we can get it done. It has a few changes of key I cannot recall.
Growing up with these guys, playing in the Pioneer Jr. High Marching Band, and living a wonderful life through the entire Dorey family will always remain “Great Charger Memories'” for me. I’m happy for them getting together again. Thanks for American Bandstand , Ed Sullivan , Sha Na Na.. every song recorded and performed during that era were ones you’d sing over and over again in the shower and that includes their songs too!!! Congratulations Chargers… Ted Weaver
